Washington, D.C. — Following reports that the Social Security Administration will not move forward with a proposal that would have significantly restricted access to Social Security disability benefits for older workers, Rebecca Vallas, CEO of the National Academy of Social Insurance, issued the following statement:
“I’m incredibly pleased to see Commissioner Bisignano and the Administration decide not to pursue proposed cuts to Social Security’s disability programs — cuts that would have been deeply unpopular across the political spectrum and out of step not only with what the American people want, but also with President Trump’s repeated promises not to cut Social Security.
“Americans across party lines have been clear: they want to see Social Security protected and strengthened, not cut. The Commissioner’s decision reflects both sound judgment and a recognition of the critical role Social Security Disability Insurance plays for millions of older workers, people with disabilities, and their families.
“I’m heartened by this terrific news, and I look forward to continuing to work with Commissioner Bisignano and his team to strengthen Social Security and its disability programs in the chapter ahead.”
