WASHINGTON, DC – The National Academy of Social Insurance announced today that Kathleen M. King will serve as Director of Health Security Policy.

“Ms. King’s health policy expertise and leadership skills add a new dimension to the Academy’s health policy team,” said Robert D. Reischauer, chair of the Academy’s Medicare Steering Committee.

As Director of Health Security Policy, Ms. King will oversee the Academy’s on-going project on Restructuring Medicare for the Long-Term. The project has issued six major reports to date and has three on-going expert study panels. The nonpartisan panels are investigating Medicare’s management and governance, Medicare’s role in meeting the needs of people with chronic conditions, and Medicare’s role in a more market-based system. Ms. King will also lead the Academy’s other health policy activities and help set its future agenda in health policy research.

King joins the National Academy of Social Insurance from the Washington Business Group on Health, where she served as Vice-President. Prior to that, she was Executive Associate Administrator at the Health Care Financing Administration (now called the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this position she was the third ranking official in the federal agency that administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs that provide health insurance to more than 75 million Americans. King was previously a staff member at the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and a health policy specialist at the Congressional Research Service.

The National Academy of Social Insurance (www.nasi.org) is America’s only private, non-partisan resource center made up of the nation’s leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to conduct research and enhance public understanding of social insurance, to develop new leaders, and to provide a nonpartisan forum for exchange of ideas on important issues in the field.
