Sachin Jain

Sachin Jain, M.D., M.B.A., is chief medical information and innovation officer (CMIIO) at Merck, where he develops strategies and global partnerships to leverage health data to improve patient health. Jain also serves as an attending hospitalist physician at the Boston VA-Boston Medical Center, and is a lecturer in healthcare policy at Harvard Medical School. With Karen Davis and Susan Dentzer, he is co-chairing the Academy’s 27th Annual Conference, Medicaid and Medicare: The Next 50 Years, on January 28-29, 2015 in Washington, DC.
Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Jain was senior advisor to the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he helped launch the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, briefly serving as its acting deputy director for policy and programs. He was also special assistant to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), supporting the agency’s implementation of the HITECH Provisions of the Recovery Act, which provides incentives for physicians and hospitals to become meaningful users of health information technology.
Previously, Jain was a Clinical Fellow in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Department of Medicine, and Special Assistant to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. In this role, Jain worked closely with David Blumenthal in executing his health IT agenda, leading initiatives on usability, private sector engagement, and disparities in care. Prior to joining the Office of the National Coordinator, Jain was a member of the faculty at Harvard Business School and a resident physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Jain worked previously at WellPoint, McKinsey & Co, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and served as an expert consultant to the World Health Organization.
A founder of ImproveHealthCare.org and a founding member and Associate Director of the Global Health Delivery Project, Jain is also a founder of several non-profit healthcare ventures, including the Homeless Health Clinic at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter and the Harvard Bone Marrow Initiative.
Jain has authored more than 50 publications on healthcare delivery innovation and healthcare reform in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Health Affairs, and is co-editor-in-chief and co-founder of Health Care: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation. He also co-edited the book, “The Soul of a Doctor.”
A 1999 Somers Aging and Long-Term Care Research Intern at the Alpha Center for Health Policy (now the Academy for Health Services Research and Policy) under the supervision of Academy member Deborah Chollet, Jain published ”Mapping the Code: State Genetic Information Policy.”

He has been a driving force in efforts to improve health care quality and patient outcomes in a variety of positions in policy and medicine, in both government and the private sector,” says Academy President G. A member of the National Academy of Social Insurance since 2010, Jain earned his M.D. from Harvard University. Sachin lives an isolating existence as a New York Yankees-fan based in Boston and takes guilty pleasure in Law and Order reruns. In his spare time he works on a novel that he is certain will never be complete. In 2014 he was named one of the Improper Bostonians most eligible bachelors.
