Keynote Speaker at the Academy's 20th Annual Conference

Drew Altman, President and CEO of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, will be a keynote speaker at the Academy’s 20th annual conference, Getting to Universal Health Insurance Coverage, January 31, 2008.

“After establishing a track record of remarkable accomplishment in both the private and public sectors, Drew Altman has reshaped the Kaiser Family Foundation into a major force in health policy and health services, not only in the United States, but throughout the world,” said fellow NASI member Bruce Vladeck. “While Kaiser’s resources are very small compared to the other major health care foundations, its impact has been second to none.”

Altman joined the Foundation in 1991 and at that time directed a complete overhaul of its mission and operating style. He is a former Commissioner of the Department of Human Services for the State of New Jersey under Governor Tom Kean (1986-1989). Prior to that, Altman was Director of the Health and Human Services program at the Pew Charitable Trusts. He was Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1981 to 1986, and served in a senior position in the Health Care Financing Administration during the Carter Administration.

A founding member of the Academy, he received his B.A. from Brandeis University and Master’s in Political Science from Brown University. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, did his post-doctoral work at the Harvard School of Public Health, and taught graduate courses in Public Policy at MIT before moving on to public service. Altman is a member of the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
