Howard Fluhr

Co-Chair of the Academy's 21st Annual Conference

Conference co-chair Howard Fluhr is an enviable actuary. He consults to the NBA, NFL and NHL, and in fact, will leave the conference a bit early to attend the Super Bowl XLIII. At the 2007 Academy conference, Mr. Fluhr spoke on “Public Policy, Employers, and the Weather” as his commentary on retirement security at the Academy's January 2007 conference. President Margaret Simms was pleased that he agreed to co-chair the 21st annual conference “Social Insurance, Fiscal Responsibility, and Economic Growth.”

A longtime leader on issues of employers' and employees' perspectives on social insurance, pensions and employee benefits, Mr. Fluhr has been Chairman of The Segal Company since 2006, and was President and CEO for the prior twelve years. Mr. Fluhr is a member of the Board of Trustees and past Chairman of the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).

“Howard is creative, innovative and energetic, while at the same time advocating strongly for elements of the system that may be old, but are vital components of economic security,” said Academy member (and EBRI Founder and President) Dallas Salisbury. “Howard sets his mind to strengthening foundations like Social Security and defined benefit annuities, and then finds creative solutions for additions, and sells them."

Mr. Fluhr is the author of numerous articles and has spoken extensively on human resource and employee benefits issues. Mr. Fluhr has also spoken on the interplay of private pensions, Social Security and public policy, including testimony before a Presidential commission. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries as well as a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and an Enrolled Actuary.

He served as a member of the Board of Directors for six years and as a Vice President of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, as well as six years as a Board Member of the American Academy of Actuaries for which he served as Vice President of its pension council.

Mr. Fluhr received his Bachelor's degree in mathematics and philosophy from New York University. A member of the National Academy of Social Insurance since 2006, he lives in Manhattan with his psychotherapist wife Margaret — they have two grown daughters and four grandchildren and neither has plans to retire in the near future. They devote much time to travel, history and the arts, and try to treat New York as if they were tourists.
