Keynote Speaker at the Academy's 20th Annual Conference
Uwe E. Reinhardt will be the opening keynote speaker at the Academy’s 20th annual conference, Getting to Universal Health Insurance Coverage, January 31, 2008. He is the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1968.
“Uwe Reinhardt is the perfect keynote speaker for the Academy’s conference,” said Academy Board member Jack Ebeler. “He combines a deep analytic understanding of the health care financing system with a passion for reform and keen insights into the political policy process that reform must traverse. Couple that with his unique ability to use humor as a vehicle for education and communication, and the rest of us can only look on with jealousy.”
At Princeton, Reinhardt’s teaching duties have included micro- and macroeconomics; financial management for commercial, not-for-profit, and government entities; and health economics and policy. His research interests have centered primarily on health economics and policy, although he has also written on topics in accounting and finance. Professor Reinhardt has been a consultant to a wide range of business firms and government entities, and has served on the private sector National Leadership Commission on Health Care. From 1986-1995, he served three consecutive three-year terms as a Commissioner on the Physician Payment Review Commission (PPRC), established in 1986 by the Congress to advise it on issues related to the payment of physicians.
| He was a member of the Academy’s study panel on Medicare’s Larger Social Role, and co-chaired the Academy’s 11th Annual Conference, “Social Security and Medicare: Individual versus Collective Risk and Responsibility” in January 1999. A founding member of the Academy, Professor Reinhardt received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University.
