New Jersey Workers' Compensation Payments Fell Relative to Payroll in 2004

New Reports Track 15 Year Trend in Payments

WASHINGTON, DC–New Jersey workers' compensation payments declined slightly relative to payroll in 2004, according to two studies released today by the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI). Compared to the wages of workers covered by the program, benefit payments fell by 2 cents per $100 of payroll—from 79 cents per $100 in 2003 to 77 cents per $100 in 2004, the latest year for which data are available.

Over the past 15 years, workers' compensation payments in New Jersey have been more stable than for the nation as a whole. In New Jersey, payments have ranged from a high of 92 cents per $100 of covered payroll in 1991 to a low of 71 cents per $100 in 2000. For the United States, benefits peaked in 1992 at $1.68 per $100 of payroll and then fell every year until they reached a low of $1.06 per $100 of payroll in 2000.

In relation to payroll, New Jersey payments for workers' compensation are below the U.S. average. While benefits in New Jersey were 77 cents per $100 of state covered payroll in 2004, national benefits were $1.13 per $100 of covered payroll.
