In June 2024, the Academy launched a cross-sector expert Task Force on AI, Emerging Technology, and Disability Benefits. This report is the culmination of the Task Force’s first phase of work, which outlines principles and guardrails to guide the Social Security Administration’s approach to AI and act as a “north star” for future regulations, guidance and policies. The use of AI and emerging technology in the context of disability benefits presents both risks and opportunities. The Task Force’s phase one report establishes important guideposts for the Social Security Administration to utilize when deploying AI and other emerging technologies in rights-impacting contexts.
