In Memoriam: David G. Smith
David G. Smith, an Academy Member since 2008, has passed away.
Dr. Smith was a Professor in the Department of Political Science of Swarthmore College. He began his career at Swarthmore in 1953, where he held several teaching and research positions. He was the co-author with Academy Member Judith Moore of Medicaid Politics and Policy, a definitive history of this vital program. He also authored several books and journal articles on Medicare and the politics of health care finance and reform. Dr. Smith received his PhD in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University.
In June 2015, we conducted a symposium as part of the Academy’s Medicare & Medicaid at 50 series of events. This symposium was held in conjunction with the release of an update of Dr. Smith’s and Judith Moore’s book. Here’s a link to this event:
Academy Member Lynn Etheredge stated:
“David will be remembered by many for his hundreds of in-person interviews with professional staff. His work emphasized their great contributions to evolving our nation’s health insurance programs. His studies are essential for understanding the functioning of American government and the complex multi-decade growth and history of these programs.”
