In Memoriam: Jane Ross

 

 

National Academy Founding Member and former Treasurer, Jane Ross, passed away earlier this month.

Jane spent many years developing program policy for the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO). At SSA, she was the Deputy Commissioner for Policy at In that position, she was an advisor to the Commissioner of Social Security on policy issues, as well as leader of the policy analysis and research office. She also served as the Deputy Associate Commissioner for Policy and the Director of the Office of Research, Statistics, and International Policy at SSA. She served as a consultant to the social security system of Bulgaria on policy analysis and strategic planning matters. At GAO, she was the Director for Income Security Issues and Senior Assistant Director for Medicare and Medicaid Issues.

Jane served on the Academy’s Board of Directors from 2010 to 2014 and was the Academy’s Treasurer. She also served on the Academy’s Uncharted Waters Study Panel in 2005. She was also deeply involved in the Academy’s leadership development programs.

She also served on the Board of Directors of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Max Richtman, President and CEO of the Committee, said of Jane:

Dr. Jane Ross was a champion for Social Security for most of her life.  She worked tirelessly as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare to help us be better advocates for the elderly and disabled. Jane was truly a shining example of those who responded to the call for public service issued by President John F. Kennedy. Jane leaves behind a legacy of assistance to millions of Social Security beneficiaries whose lives were improved by her work. Jane’s wisdom, patience and deep knowledge of the needs of working families will be sorely missed by those of us who knew her and worked with her over the years.”

Jane received her Ph.D. in economics from American University.
